Eric Benchimol is a pediatric gastroenterologist and holds the Northbridge Chair in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) at SickKids. He treats children with IBD (Crohn’s and colitis). He is a Professor of Paediatrics and Clinical Epidemiology at University of Toronto, and a Senior Core Scientist at ICES. Dr. Benchimol chairs the Canadian Gastro-Intestinal Epidemiology Consortium (CanGIEC.ca), which works to understand why Canada has amongst the highest rates of IBD in the world and improving the health system. He chairs the Scientific and Medical Advisory Council of Crohn’s and Colitis Canada and co-chairs its COVID-19 Task Force, formed in the pandemic to provide advice and guidance to IBD patients.

Dr. Benchimol also works to improve the methods used to conduct research using routinely-collected health data, generated through the real-world care of patients. He co-chairs the RECORD Steering Committee (record-statement.org), an international group improving the quality and transparency of research using health data.
