Dr. Jana Kusch holds a PhD in biology and works at the University Hospital Jena, Germany, as a senior scientist and lecturer. In her profession, she is at home in two worlds. Her research projects are based in the world of biophysics and deal with structure-function relationships of membrane proteins and the development of methods to understand them. In the interdisciplinary environment of the Institute of Heart-and-Circulation Physiology, she and her colleagues combine different techniques such as molecular biology, electrophysiology, fluorescence microscopy, and mathematical approaches. As a lecturer, however, she moves into the world of physiology, teaching students in human medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, biochemistry, and nutritional sciences.
