Biography

Dr. Nguyen is a physician-scientist in Cardiology and Biophysics and the Principal Investigator of an NIH-funded research laboratory at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. She received dual Ph.D. in Neuroscience and M.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine as an NIH Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) scholar. On completion of Internal Medicine residency at Johns Hopkins and dual Cardiology and Postdoctoral Specialty Training and Advanced Research (STAR) fellowships at UCLA, she joined UCLA Cardiology faculty. Her scientific expertise in the diverse fields of neuroscience, cardiology, ion channelopathies, system biology, biophysics, and electrophysiology provides her with a unique research perspective for multidisciplinary cardiovascular research. Her research program focuses on the contributions of myocardial fibrosis and stress to cardiac arrhythmogenesis and repair in vertebrate models of human cardiac electrophysiology. Her laboratory routinely performs rigorous mechanistic studies using in vivo techniques (electrocardiography, echocardiography, open-heart surgery, and genetic engineering) as well as ex vivo and in vitro techniques (ion channel biophysics, voltage- and calcium-sensitive fluorescent optical imaging, patch clamp, dynamic clamp, molecular biology, and immunohistochemistry). She serves as scientific reviewer for numerous journals and grant study sessions and as Vice Chair of the Arrhythmias & Sudden Cardiac Death Oversight Advisory Committee for the American Heart Association.
