This workshop is essential for those who want to master catheterization techniques of the jugular vein, the femoral vein, and the carotid artery in rats and mice. These models allow for automated blood sampling using instruments such as the BASi turning cages in combination with the Culex autosampler.

Attendees can expect activities such as:

  • catheterization of the rat or mouse jugular vein
  • catheterization of the rat or mouse femoral vein
  • catheterization of the rat or mouse carotid artery
  • catheterization of the rat or mouse hepatic portal vein
  • other techniques of special interest to participants by agreement before or during the module

He is best known for his extensive work and procedures surrounding rodent best practices, pre/post-op care, and animal welfare in the surgical setting.

A specialist in many microsurgical and general techniques, i.e. anatomy, suturing, intubation, telemetry implantations, vascular and non-vascular catheterizations, myocardial infarction models, stereotaxic surgery, and more. She has experience in rats, mice, hamsters, and guinea pigs.

René Remie Surgical Skills Centre

Research interests include medical applications of plasma science, electrosurgery, wound healing, and fundamental cell biology. In 2014 she graduated in veterinary sciences from Ghent University, Belgium. She has an unmatched knowledge of guinea pigs and is a senior instructor at RRSSC.
