Dr. Mukund Seshadri presents his interdisciplinary research on developing and evaluating ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging for oral oncology applications, with a focus on the prognostic utility of these methods in assessing treatment responses in head and neck cancer patients.
A major effort within Dr. Seshadri’s translational research program is focused on the development of ultrasound (US) and US-based methods including photoacoustic imaging (PAI) for clinical application in oral oncology.
The work is interdisciplinary in nature and draws on concepts from oral medicine/biology, oncology, radiology and cancer therapeutics. Given the inherent advantages of PAI over traditional ballistic optical imaging methods, the Seshadri lab has been actively evaluating its prognostic utility as a biomarker of tumor and normal tissue response to standard of care chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapy.
Building on the lab’s strong foundational work in preclinical models, their current efforts are focused on translating their preclinical observations and further evaluating the performance of US-PAI for head and neck cancer patients.
Key Topics Include:
- Development of ultrasound (US) and US-based methods including photoacoustic imaging (PAI) for clinical application in oral oncology
- Evaluating PAI prognostic utility as a biomarker of tumor and normal tissue response to standard of care chemotherapy, radiation therapy and targeted therapy
- Translating preclinical observations and further evaluating the performance of US-PAI for head and neck cancer patients
